Mirror glaze cake

For a Chinese New Year party, I decided to try making a mirror glaze cake.

I followed the basic mirror glaze recipe found here. I used chocolate frosting for flavor, with the expectation that the glaze would be opaque. The hardest part of this project was making the frosted cake with a perfectly flat top and smoothed frosting all around. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it quite perfect, and every imperfection showed up in the final product.

I made three glaze colors: red, yellow, and white.

I tried adding some yellow and white to the bowl of red glaze, then pouring, but found that it didn’t get the marbled look I wanted. I found it was better to pour on the red first, then drizzle on the other colors so that they would stand out against the red.

In hindsight, I should have let the glaze cool a little longer, as it did not go on as thick as I would have liked. Also, the glaze was not as opaque as I hoped. I will use white frosting if I try it again.
