This periodical cicada (genus Magicicada) was on a plant in a wooded area behind my house.
I was surprised to see a periodical cicada, as the large emergence in this area, brood X, isn’t due for several more years. However, it looks like brood VI does emerge in this area, just not in the large numbers of brood X.
The cicada’s shed nymphal skin was located on the same plant, about eight inches below.
